This painting is based on the migrations of ancestral Maori and our relationship with Hawaiki and the Pacific.
The tapa represents Hawaiiki.
The Korowai represents Aotearoa.
The ocean that separates the two is large but not large enough that the relationship between us is ever forgotten. The feather represents the migrations and the birds signaled our distance to land.
The tukutuku design is a traditional pattern named Aramoana. It represents love across great distances.
